LanguagesSpanish is the official language of Honduras, but this does not mean it is the only language spoken. According to the World Ethnologue Report, there are 10 total languages that are spoken in Honduras.
The official Language of Honduras, like many other South American nations, is indeed Spanish . This entails that Spanish is used in education, legislation, and often common, everyday usage. The three main subsequent languages are Garifuna and Mískito, both being derivatives of indigenous languages, and English, which is associated with primarily the Northern Coastal regions of Honduras (ethnologue report, 2017). More interestingly is the presence of other immigrant and extinct languages such as Chinese or Mayan. Honduras carries one of the largest population of speakers of the extinct Mayan language; Arabic is also relatively common, where roughly 3% of the population are known to speak fluently (world atlas, 2004). It is important to note that those who are bilingual in Honduras are those that speak immigrant or indigenous languages and out of necessity do they also know Spanish to communicate with the majority of Hondurans. |
